-
Doulas are non-medical but experienced support for pregnant moms and their partners. They teach, coach, and encourage soon-to-be moms, so they go into labor and delivery with strategies for coping with the pain and challenges of each stage.
-
The birth process can be confusing and fearful. A doula helps you mentally prepare for the physical and emotional challenges of labor and delivery, reducing fear and doubt, and boosting confidence. A doula will arm you with knowledge about your body and what’s about to happen. During labor, they’ll coach you through each step of the process.
-
Typically, doulas receive certification from a certifying organization. This usually includes up to 27 hours of workshops, reading, and exams, and requirements for practical experience at real births.
-
Midwives are clinically trained professionals who deliver babies and perform medical procedures connected with birth. Doulas are not medical professionals; they don’t provide medical advice or deliver the baby. They are there to help you cope with pain and make sure you’re prepared for each step.
-
Your doula will help reassure you and explain what’s happening and what to expect. They’ll be there to help with postpartum recovery support as well.
